SRT, SRTLA and RIST URL builder
Put in your server and stream ID and get the right URL for Moblin, IRL Pro, OBS and BELABOX, a QR code to scan on your phone, and the SRT latency to use. RIST URLs too.
Your stream URLs
Moblin, IRL Pro, IRLwhatever
Set the SRT latency to 2,500 ms in the app's stream settings.
In Moblin, add it as a custom RIST stream. Bonding is on by default in the stream's RIST settings, so it sends over all your connections.
OBS, ffmpeg (caller)
OBS and ffmpeg can't send SRTLA. To send from a computer, use your server's SRT port instead.
BELABOX
Settings, then Stream| Receiver address | |
|---|---|
| Receiver port | |
| SRT stream ID | |
| SRT latency |
Scan on your phone
Add your server address to make a QR code.
This QR code and URL contain your stream ID. Anyone who has it can stream to your server, so don't show it on stream.
SRT, SRTLA and RIST URLs explained
An SRTLA URL looks like srtla://srt.example.com:5000?streamid=abc123. It has three parts: the server address, the port the SRTLA receiver listens on, and the stream ID that tells the server which stream is yours. Moblin, IRL Pro and IRLwhatever take the whole URL in one box. BELABOX asks for each part separately.
An SRT URL for OBS or ffmpeg adds a few options: mode=caller (your computer connects to the server), latency in microseconds (so 2,500 ms is 2500000), and an optional passphrase and pbkeylen for AES encryption.
A RIST URL looks like rist://rist.example.com:5000?buffer=2000. RIST has no stream ID: the server address and port are the stream. The options use the names from librist, the RIST library Moblin, OBS and ffmpeg use: buffer in milliseconds, and username and password for servers that give you a login, or secret with aes-type (128 or 256) for a shared passphrase. Moblin bonds RIST across your connections by itself, so the URL is the same whether you bond or not.
Everything you type here stays in your browser. The stream ID and passphrase are never added to the page link, so you can share your settings without sharing access to your server.
Picking an SRT latency
SRT latency is how long the receiver waits for lost packets to be resent before it gives up on them. Haivision, who created SRT, recommend setting it to a multiple of your round-trip time that grows with packet loss:
| Packet loss | Latency | At 80 ms ping |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 1% | 3 × RTT | 240 ms |
| Up to 3% | 4 × RTT | 320 ms |
| Up to 7% | 6 × RTT | 480 ms |
| Up to 12% | 8 × RTT | 640 ms |
| Up to 21% | 10 × RTT | 800 ms |
| Up to 30% | 13 to 14 × RTT | 1,040 to 1,120 ms |
| Up to 40% | 30 × RTT | 2,400 ms |
From Haivision's SRT deployment guide. The minimum is 20 ms and the maximum 8,000 ms.
Mobile connections are messier than that table assumes: round-trip times jump when you change cell towers and bonded links each have their own. That's why IRL streamers usually set 1,500 to 3,000 ms. For the moments when every link drops, disconnect protection switches to your BRB scene.
FAQ
SRT URL questions
What is the difference between an SRT and SRTLA URL?
An srt:// URL sends one SRT stream over one connection. An srtla:// URL tells the app to bond all your connections and send the stream across them to an SRTLA receiver, which rebuilds it into a normal SRT stream. What is SRTLA? explains bonding in more detail.
Is the SRT latency in the URL milliseconds or microseconds?
In OBS and ffmpeg srt:// URLs, latency is in microseconds, so 2,500 ms is written as 2500000. Moblin, IRL Pro and BELABOX have their own latency setting in milliseconds.
What SRT latency should I use for IRL streaming?
Most IRL streamers on mobile data use 1,500 to 3,000 ms. On a steady connection you can work it out as a multiple of your round-trip time: 3 times on a clean link, rising with packet loss.
Is it safe to put my stream ID in this tool?
Yes. The page runs in your browser and sends nothing to a server. The stream ID and passphrase are never saved in the page link. Just don't show the QR code or URL on stream.
Should I use RIST or SRTLA?
Use whichever your server receives. SRTLA is the usual choice for bonded IRL streaming and works in Moblin, IRL Pro, IRLwhatever and BELABOX. Moblin can bond RIST too, so RIST works if your server takes it.
Which apps can scan the QR code?
Scan it with your phone's camera and copy the URL into Moblin, IRL Pro or IRLwhatever. To set up Moblin, IRL Pro or IRLwhatever in one scan, with video settings too, use the setup QR code maker.
