IRL streaming data usage calculator
See how much mobile data your streams use at your bitrate, how it splits across bonded SIMs, and whether your data plans will last the month.
Your data usage
Per connection
a monthHow much data does IRL streaming use?
At the common IRL bitrate of 6,000 kbps with 128 kbps audio, a stream uses about 2.8 GB an hour before overhead, or about 2.9 GB with 5% overhead. A 4-hour stream is around 11.6 GB, and streaming that long three times a week adds up to roughly 140 GB a month.
| Video bitrate | Per hour | 4-hour stream | 12 streams of 4 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2,500 kbps | 1.2 GB | 5.0 GB | 60 GB |
| 4,000 kbps | 1.9 GB | 7.8 GB | 93 GB |
| 6,000 kbps | 2.9 GB | 11.6 GB | 139 GB |
| 8,000 kbps | 3.8 GB | 15.4 GB | 184 GB |
With 128 kbps audio and 5% overhead, in decimal GB (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes).
The formula
Bitrate is measured in kilobits per second, and there are 8 bits in a byte, so:
GB per hour = (video kbps + audio kbps) × 1,000 × 3,600 ÷ 8 ÷ 1,000,000,000 × (1 + overhead)
That works out to 0.45 GB an hour for every 1,000 kbps, which is a handy number to remember. Phones and some apps count in GiB (1,073,741,824 bytes), which makes the same usage look about 7% smaller, so switch the units above if your phone's numbers don't match.
Bonding doesn't double your data
With SRTLA bonding, Moblin, IRL Pro and BELABOX split one stream across your connections. Two SIMs each carry part of it, so the total is the same as one connection, plus a little extra for packets that get resent. The split is rarely even: the faster or more stable link carries more, so a SIM on a weaker carrier often uses far less than half.
Your bitrate drops when the signal does, so real streams usually use less than this calculator shows. Treat the result as the most a stream can use at that bitrate.
Ways to use less data
- Use HEVC (H.265) on your phone. It looks about as good as H.264 at around 30% less bitrate. Moblin and IRL Pro support it, and a Cloud OBS server converts it for Twitch and Kick.
- Stream at 30 fps when you're walking or talking. Keep 60 fps for action.
- Turn on your BRB scene during breaks instead of streaming a blank screen at full bitrate. Disconnect protection does this for you when the signal goes.
- Check what each carrier counts. Some "unlimited" plans slow down hotspot or high-speed data after a cap.
FAQ
Data usage questions
How many GB is a 1-hour IRL stream?
About 0.45 GB for every 1,000 kbps of bitrate. At 6,000 kbps video with 128 kbps audio that's about 2.8 GB, or 2.9 GB with typical overhead. At 4,000 kbps it's about 1.9 GB.
Does bonding two SIMs use twice the data?
No. SRTLA splits one stream between your connections, so the total is about the same as streaming over one connection. Each SIM uses its share of it, plus a little overhead for resent packets.
Is 100 GB of data enough for IRL streaming?
At 6,000 kbps, 100 GB covers about 34 hours of streaming, so around eight 4-hour streams. At 4,000 kbps it covers about 51 hours. Split across two SIMs, each plan needs roughly half.
Why does my phone show different numbers?
Phones often count in GiB, which are about 7% bigger than the GB carriers sell, and your real bitrate drops whenever the signal does. Switch the results to GiB to compare with your phone.
What bitrate should I stream at?
Most IRL streamers use 4,000 to 8,000 kbps at 1080p. The bitrate checker shows how good each bitrate looks for your settings.
