How to IRL Stream on Kick or Twitch from Your Phone
Everything you need to go live outdoors with just your phone: which app to use, how to stay online with SRTLA bonding, and how a cloud OBS server adds overlays, alerts and a BRB screen to your stream.
What you need
- A phone and a streaming app. Moblin on iPhone or IRL Pro on Android. Both are free and support SRTLA bonding.
- Mobile data. An unlimited plan if you can get one. A second SIM or a hotspot lets you bond two connections.
- Power. Streaming drains a phone fast, so bring a power bank.
- Optional: a camera. A DJI Osmo Pocket or Action camera can send its picture through your phone. See our DJI with Moblin guide.
- Optional but recommended: a cloud OBS server, for overlays, alerts and a stream that survives signal drops.
Two ways to go live from your phone
1. Straight from the app to Kick or Twitch
Paste your Kick or Twitch stream key into the app and go live. It's the quickest way to start, but what viewers see is only what your phone sends: no full overlays or alerts, and when your signal drops, so does your stream.
2. Phone → cloud OBS server → Kick or Twitch
Your phone sends video to a cloud OBS server, and the server sends the finished stream to Kick, Twitch or both. The server adds your scenes, overlays, chat and alerts, and when your phone drops it keeps the stream live with a BRB scene until you're back. This is how most full-time IRL streamers set up.
With a server in the middle you can also use SRTLA bonding: your phone splits the stream across two connections at once, so one dropping out doesn't end anything.
Step by step with a cloud OBS server
Get a cloud OBS server
Pick an IRLhosting plan. We set your server up for you, usually well within 24 hours.
Install Moblin or IRL Pro
Moblin from the App Store on iPhone, or IRL Pro from Google Play on Android.
Connect the app to your server
Use the one-tap import in your client area, make a setup QR code with the Moblin QR code generator, or follow our Moblin setup guide or IRL Pro setup guide to enter your SRTLA address.
Add your Kick or Twitch stream key
On Kick, copy the stream URL and key from your creator dashboard settings. On Twitch, copy your primary stream key from Creator Dashboard → Settings → Stream. Paste them into your server's destinations in IRLstudio.
Set up your scenes
Add your overlay, chat and alerts in IRLstudio's Overlay Maker. Your BRB scene already plays clips from your channel. Running your own OBS instead? The NOALBS config generator sets up automatic BRB switching, and the bitrate overlay puts your bitrate on stream.
Go live
Start sending from the app, then press Go live in IRLstudio or IRLremote. Walk a test lap around the block before your first real stream.
Bitrate and data usage
Start at around 4–6 Mbps for 1080p and let the app lower it when your signal gets weak. Data use is roughly bitrate multiplied by time:
| Bitrate | Data per hour | 4-hour stream |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | about 1.35 GB | about 5.4 GB |
| 4 Mbps | about 1.8 GB | about 7.2 GB |
| 6 Mbps | about 2.7 GB | about 10.8 GB |
| 8 Mbps | about 3.6 GB | about 14.4 GB |
With SRTLA bonding the total is shared between your connections, but the overall amount is the same. Work out your exact numbers with the bitrate calculator and the data usage calculator.
Tips for staying live
- Bond two connections from different carriers, so a dead zone on one network is covered by the other.
- Keep the phone cool. Phones lower performance when they overheat, so keep yours out of direct sun.
- Let disconnect protection do its job. Don't restart the stream when you drop. The server keeps viewers on your BRB scene until you're back.
- Check the platform's rules for IRL streams in your area and category before you go out.
FAQ
IRL streaming from your phone: FAQ
Can I IRL stream to Kick from my phone?
Yes. Apps like Moblin (iPhone) and IRL Pro (Android) can stream straight to Kick, or to a cloud OBS server that adds overlays, alerts and a BRB screen and then streams to Kick for you.
What is the best app for IRL streaming?
Moblin on iPhone and IRL Pro on Android are the most popular, because both are free and both support SRTLA bonding. Pick the one for your phone.
How much data does IRL streaming use?
Roughly bitrate × time. At 6 Mbps you use about 2.7 GB an hour, and at 4 Mbps about 1.8 GB an hour. A four-hour stream at 6 Mbps is around 11 GB, so an unlimited plan is worth it.
What bitrate should I use for IRL streaming?
Around 4–6 Mbps for 1080p is a good start on mobile data. Let the app lower it automatically when your signal is weak; Moblin and IRL Pro both adjust the bitrate on the fly.
Do I need a backpack to IRL stream?
No. A phone with good data, a power bank and a cloud OBS server is enough to start. A backpack with extra modems helps if you stream in busy places with weak coverage.
Can I stream to Twitch and Kick at the same time?
Yes, with a server that multistreams. IRLhosting's Intermediate plan streams to up to 5 platforms at once, and Professional to up to 12.
